Get Ready for the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

The UK government will put every year 1 child through a phonics assessment. The test will include 50% real words and 50% pseudo-words. Check out the sample assessment materials released by the government.

Practice Books: these include both high frequency words (like 'dad', 'man', 'sad', 'ant') and more unusual words (like 'sap', 'din', 'nip'), that children are unlikely to recognise and might as well be pseudo-words to a child!

Martian Reading: have children play a variety of games and activities designed to familarise them with reading pseudo-words during free flow or guided reading sessions.
